I recall a statement made by Jefferson Airplane’s Marty Balin many years after the band was a 1970s icon. He was commenting on the revolutionary nature of much of the lyrics to Jefferson Airplane music in those days(as exemplified by the song ‘Volunteers’). Probably 15 years ago now I heard Balin say on a radio interview, I am paraphrasing: “People ask about the lyrics to all the protest and revolution songs. We didn’t write those lyrics. We were told what to play and much of what we played was written by people we didn’t even know.” That has really stuck with me.

Interesting. I think most are done by others and as we know much more these days and with another purpose in mind. I waited on Grace Slick several times in my younger days when she would come in to eat at the place I worked at. I just checked out her website and it is interesting to say the least.. I waited on George Lucas and his family too and other famous people. .I tend to think he was given a script to go off. I pulled out an Eagles cd and was listening in the car the other day. The lyrics are sounding very different than 30 years ago or whenever it was. Thanks for the reminder.
